The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has released its latest statistics for motorcycle fatalities and injuries. According to the data, motorcycle riders are 35 times more likely to die in an accident and 8 times more likely to sustain injuries than a car passenger. Motorcycle fatalities are also on the rise yet again—5,154 motorcycle fatalities were reported in the United States in 2007, a 7 percent increase from 2006’s reported 4,837deaths. Motorcycle injuries have also increased, there were 103,000 reported injuries—a 15 percent increase from 2006’s 88,000 injuries.
NHTSA’s statistics also confirm the extreme importance of how wearing a helmet can save a life. Helmets are estimated to be 37 percent effective in preventing fatal injuries to motorcyclists. This means that for every 100 motorcyclists killed in crashes while not wearing a helmet, 37 of them could have been saved had all 100 worn helmets. NHTSA estimates that in 2007, helmets saved 1,784 motorcyclists lives and at least 800 more could have been saved if all motorcyclists had worn their helmets.
Wondering how New Jersey ranked? New Jersey was among the top 15 states that had the highest percentage of helmet usage. In 2007, 83% of the state’s registered motorcyclists wore helmets. However there was a reported 79 motorcycle fatalities.
