I was told to expect great things from Castelluccio, and while it is an unusually interesting geographical place, it was a lot drier and empty than I had imagined. But I couldnt of a more perfect place for a beginner to fly. Flat landing fields as far as the eye can see, rolling mountains and consistent wind.
The town itself is perched on top of a hill, like many Italian rural towns. It seemed to be a little shabby...under construction. Gerolf said he recalled it was the same when he visited it 5 years ago.
We had some lunch in the town...I took a gamble and ordered what I thought was a bruschetta with lentils (lentils are the local crop). I ended up with a bowl of lentils. Gerolf flew around for a while and noticed that it was not as smooth as he though, due to the forest underneath the launch. Instantly I got nervous. The wind was picking up too. When I finally took off, the gusts were strong on take off, and I could not make it into my harness quick enough so my legs swung from side to side, swinging me and the glider...making for a interesting launch for the spectators. Once I got inot the harness and centered the glider all was good. I was on radio and Gerolf directed me into a lovely thermal. How nice are thermals...when they are not too strong of course....
I lost it eventually and couldnt find another one(more skills needed here for sure), so I eventually landed at the bottom. Right as I landed i had my first encounter with an angry farmer for landing in his field. So sorry Mr. Farmer. I was thrilled with the flight all the same, and feel good about my thermalling, and landing.

Kingdom Holding Company (KHC) has announced that it has completed the sale of the Monte Carlo Grand Hotel in Monaco with proceeds valued at SR150 million ($40 million).
PJ Shoucair executive director for International Investments at KHC said the sale of the hotel was in line with KHC's strategy, under the chairmanship of Prince Alwaleed bin Talal bin Abdulaziz Alsaud, to continue to realise value from hotel assets either through a sale or aggressive operational and financial management across KHC's hotel portfolio.
The Monte Carlo Grand Hotel was purchased in 2005 through a joint venture between Kingdom, Fairmont Hotels Resorts (Fairmont), and Bank of Scotland Corporate in 2005, he said.
'The hotel is a 619-room landmark property on one of the most coveted stretches of the Côte d'Azur. It was designed to echo the sleek elegance of an ocean liner and architecturally avant garde since it opened in 1975.'
Last year, Kingdom Holding announced the sale of Swissotel Sydney in Australia for SR281 million, re-financing of the Four Seasons George V hotel in Paris with net cash proceeds valued at SR285 million going to KHC.
